Clothes for little lives.
And plenty of laundry.

Compare baby clothes using actual measurements, easy openings, seasonal usefulness and laundry needs rather than age labels alone.

Start with the actual measurements

The age written on a clothing label is not a promise of fit. Look at the brand’s size chart and any length or weight measurements. If you are buying before birth, keep the order modest and check the returns policy. If it is a gift, ask which size the family needs and think about the season in which a larger size is likely to be worn.

Look at how the garment opens

Imagine changing a nappy or removing a messy outfit. Check where the fastenings sit and how much of the garment opens. A lovely pattern does not make up for an awkward opening if you find it hard to use. Consider your own preferences for poppers or zips, check the finish around closures and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Plan around washing, not a perfect quantity

There is no single number of outfits that suits every household. Your washing frequency, drying space and how quickly you can put clean clothes away all affect the useful amount. Start with a small rotation and notice what you actually need more of. Sort spare sizes separately so a drawer of clothes is not mistaken for a drawer of clothes that fit today.

Check the care label before comparing value

A garment you cannot conveniently wash may be less useful than a simpler one. Read the washing and drying instructions and check whether different items in a gift set need different care. When comparing multipacks, consider fabric, size coverage and how many pieces do the job you need; pack count alone is not a measure of usefulness.

Keep seasonal extras deliberate

Buy layers and outing clothes for your climate and routine, rather than collecting every possible accessory. For sleep clothing and bedding, use current safer-sleep guidance and the product instructions instead of styling photographs. Keep a note of sizes and items you need so relatives can choose a useful gift without duplicating what you already have.
